Good evening and my apologises for the late delivery of Frecks’ thoughts.
The group were in good spirits going into the game at Whitby on Saturday, training had been very bright and competitive which is always a good sign especially on the back of two hard fought home wins against Belper and Workington.
Whitby away is never an easy fixture and the elements alone proved very difficult and I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve felt that cold at any game ever.
We knew that we had to be functional throughout the 90 minutes on a horrendous day for playing football and to a man they were absolutely outstanding.
We totally dominated the football match in the second half and the players worked unbelievably hard to not only come from a goal down but to dig in and play in that manner to make sure we got all 3 points. When we simplify the game we are so effective, we looked solid as a unit and as a defensive block, across midfield we dealt with there diamond formation and with Luke and Marshys workrate and pace we were a constant threat on transition.Chappy and Kingy gave us so much variety and they struggled to cope with there movement and combination play.
On reflection it was a near on perfect away display and a well deserved 3 points.
The win married with Scarborough not playing closed the gap on them to 6 points in second place and gives us an outside chance of challenging the top 5.
Unfortunately the start to the season won’t allow us any slip ups and we probably have to keep this run going right until the death to be serious challengers.
What I will say is that the group cannot give us anymore as they are doing at present time.
In our last 13 league games we’ve managed 9 wins 3 draws and 1 defeat thats 30 points from a possible 39,an incredible effort from very single player thats put on a Matlock shirt.
We have a real tight knit changing room and a belief we can beat anyone on our day and its come to the fore even more so after the South Shields defeat.
Terry, Chris, Sol and Mugger keep trying to get the extra % out of every one to improve as best we can to make us stronger going into the festive period and beyond.
The injury list is getting somewhere like with Tom Davie, Vinno and Willo now in light training, with a view to get involved with the group the next week or so, which will give some major competition for places.
We have the lads who were on the bench on Saturday playing for the reserves tomorrow night to keep there fitness levels up and yet again goes to show that having the kind of set up we have has its major advantages in allowing minutes into the first team squad and the younger players who have good potential.
This Saturday we are at home to an improving Stafford Rangers team in what will be another tough game physically and mentally in which we will thave to be right on our A game to try and make it seven home wins on the spin.
We are in a good place at the moment as a football club but without the supporters we are nothing, the suppport at Whitby was incredible, in those terrible conditions, the most vocal its been and to enjoy that performance together and share a beer and a smile afterwards was very rewarding.
Thanks for your continued support.
See you all Saturday
