Goole 1-1 Matlock Town
Matlock worked hard for a draw at the Victoria Pleasure Ground after being reduced to ten men midway through the first half.
The Gladiators started the game without top scorer Ross Hannah, captain James Lukic and midfield maestro Steve Warne, so it allowed Mark Atkins to have a look at one or two players in different positions.
It was one of those, Lee Featherstone, starting in central midfield, who had the first chance of the game early on, his shot however, went as high and wide as his drives the day before at the Golf Day at Chatsworth.
A few strong challenges were exchanged before the game came to life around the half hour as Liam King was sent off for kicking out at a Goole player. It did appear as though King was trying to simply get on with the game, and maybe the referee could have taken is time in awarding the decision and asked for a substitution instead.
A bizarre incident followed as Mark Atkins took his players off the field for a few minutes in order to allow tempers to calm, during the period, Atkins was in conversation with referee and the opposition manager.
As play resumed, it wasn’t long before Matlock took the lead. Good work down the left from Ben Algar resulted in a simple tap in for DENE CROPPER, returning for his first game since his holiday.
Cropper seems to have returned sharp this pre-season, and he outpaced the back four early in the second half, only to see his shot saved well by Goole keeper Parry.
Goole brought on the experienced Vill Powell soon after, and he created a couple of half chances, before finally putting Goole level on 64 minutes. Good work down the left again left POWELL with an easy knock in from close range.
The game petered out towards the end, but it was all good game time for the Gladiators who fought well with 10 men, Adam Yates taking particular credit for controlling the back four.
