Teversal 1-2 Matlock Town
Matlock recovered from going a goal down to win their opening pre season friendly at Caernarvon Street on Saturday.
Colin Cockerill had given the Baris NCEL First Division outfit a 12th minute lead but strikes either side of theinterval from Darryl Thomas and Matty Wilkinson completed the comeback.
All three of Town’s new signings featured with David Haggerty starting at centre back alongside Micky Harcourt with Danny Holland partnering Joe Leesley in attack. Thomas came on as a substitute when referee Sean Richardson asked for Leesley to be given a breather after a couple of heavy challenges.
Manager Mark Atkins signed three more players who played afterwards in midfielders Anton Foster (from Boston United), Corey Gregory (who scored for Stalybridge Celtic in their FA Trophy defeat by Matlock last season) and Liam Gaughan (Armthorpe Welfare).
Haggerty did well to clear a dangerous cross from the left before Holland scooped a great chance high over the bar from close range.
Then came the opening goal from a free kick, conceded by Wilkinson and COCKERILL blasted fiercely beyond Jon Kennedy.
Foster looks as if he will be a useful acquisition mixing energy and flair to great effect and a beautiful cross from the right along the Teversal six yard box should really have been converted but his attacking colleagues were slow in showing attacking intent.
Then the Teversal goalkeeper pulled off a great save from Foster who had burst through on to Holland’s neat assist.
But the equaliser arrived on 43 minutes when Gregory set up Holland whose shot was parried by the goalkeeper but THOMAS stylishly knocked home the loose ball.
Then four minutes after the restart Matlock went in front when WILKINSON’s deep cross from the right turned out to be a shot, the ball nestling in the top corner by the far upright.
The intense heat was having an understandable effect on the players as Matlock comfortably saw out the remainder of the game.
Substitute Dave Edge only had a brief outing been carried off after turning an ankle. Thomas might have stretched the lead late on but was foiled in a one on one by the home goalkeeper.
A lot of potential first teamers were missing so it would be foolish to read too much into the performance which was more of a fitness exercise and blowing away the cobwebs from the summer.
