Match Report

Scott Maxfield took charge of Matlock's latest friendly ahead of the
new campaign which left the Gladiators still scratching their heads to
resolve the age old conundrum of can they score enough goals to win

In a disappointing display they never seriously extended either of the
two goalkeepers to represent Ossett on the day, Brett Souter and Chris
Barrow, so when Albion went in front after 24 minutes through Nick
Matthews, the writing was on the wall for Matlock.

It was a match easily forgotten as both sides struggled to create
chances in difficult conditions. A heavy shower fell during the
interval with the rain continuing into the second half.

Josh Batty was the latest to partner Danny Holland in attack but apart
from a 17th minute strike from distance which dropped wide, he found
the going tough.

Soon afterwards Liam Needham did well to nod away a teasing corner
with Danny South waiting to pounce.

Then came the goal as Ben Algar failed to cut out a crossfield pass
from Rob Boardman leaving Matthews clear to stroke his shot beyond the
exposed Lewis King.

Ted Cribley looked to be Town's best hope going forward and it needed
a fine challenge from Declan Dawson to deny him close to the break as
he looked to latch on to Batty's low centre.

Four minutes into the second half Cribley's penetrating run from deep
ended with his twenty yard drive drifting wide.

Joel Purkiss replaced Batty but it did not increase Matlock's thus far
impotent attacking threat although a neat move ended with Josh Meade
firing wide with just Barrow in front of him.

Patrick Hoyle hoisted an effort wide for the hosts late on as the
First Division North outfit comfortably held on. Matlock have a lot of
work to do in the attacking department with the league campaign
drawing ever closer.
