WORKSOP TOWN 5-0 MATLOCK TOWN
Nobody expected this result as Matlock were humbled by a team two divisions below them in the non-league pyramid.
The Tigers gave the Gladiators a mauling and were incredibly four goals ahead at the interval and deservedly so.
They showed their intentions from the start as in a fast break down the left Michael trench found Matthew Thompson whose shot took a deflection on its way to Phil Barnes.
A trialist headed straight at former Matlock goalkeeper Jon Kennedy shortly afterwards before Barnes held a shot from Mitch Husbands leading to a counter by the Gladiators which saw captain for the day Shaun Harrad glance a trialist’s right wing cross wide when well placed.
Worksop then increased the tempo putting the Gladiators under a period of sustained pressure. Michah Bishop crashed a fierce shot against the crossbar before the Tigers went in front on 18 minutes. A free kick from home skipper JAKE BARNETT from twenty yards slithered under the diving Barnes with the assistant signalling the ball had crossed the line.
The lead was doubled seven minutes later, the referee spotting a push on Liam Greenfield after Bishop had crossed low from the left. KYLE JORDAN wrongfooted Barnes to score comfortably from the spot.
Matlock offered little in response apart from a well struck Luis Rose strike which flashed wide and the Tigers put the match to bed with two cracking goals in three minutes.
Jack Currie found acres of space on the right to cross superbly for JORDAN to steer home from close range on 41 minutes before a fantastic twenty five yards volley from HUSBANDS flew into the corner giving Barnes no chance.
Matlock made four changes at half time but Matlock were under immediate threat when a Dwayne Wiley clearance cannoned off Jake Currie to trundle wide.
Harrad shot over the bar from a Michael Williams assist before substitute Michael Blythen had two great chances to make it five. He fired into the sidenetting following an error by Max Hunt and then he shot wide with only Barnes to beat with the visitors defence all at sea again.
Young Harry Wood was a shining light in a side that struggled on the day, his cross finding Harrad whose shot was superbly tipped over the bar by Kennedy. Then an acrobatic effort from Marc Newsham dropped wide before the nap hand for Worksop was completed with three minutes left.
A right wing corner was met by JORDAN TURNER who scored with a thumping header to make it a miserable afternoon for the Gladiators.
Matlock’s display was totally out of keeping with ones from last season and it will give the Gladiators management team plenty of food for thought. Any neutral observer would have thought that Worksop were the higher ranked club such was their superiority.
