Match Report

RUSHALL OLYMPIC 1-0 MATLOCK TOWN

Richard Brodie’s 5th minute goal decided an uninspiring contest at Dales Lane.

Matlock gave debuts to Jake Phillips and Marshall Willock as they began in a 3-5-2 formation.

But they conceded early on and yet again it was a poor goal to concede from a standard set piece situation. Josh Hawker’s free kick was helped on and found BRODIE who turned the ball past Richard Walton.

The Gladiators responded with Ricky German heading a Michael Williams cross straight at goalkeeper Joe Slinn on 11 minutes, Williams having linked intelligently with Kieran Wallace on the right. But goalmouth activity was sparse in a midfield battle.. Joe Hull was wide from another Rushall free kick and Andre Landell was comfortably wide of the target with a shot following a Matlock half clearance from one of a series of huge throws into the box by AJ Adelekan, At the other end Williams neatly beat his man some twenty yards out only to pull his left foot shot yards wide,

An improvement was clearly needed from both sides going into the second period.. Matlock looked brighter and might have levelled in the 52nd minute when both Curtis Morrison and German had shots charged down before the ball fell to Wallace who sliced agonisingly wide from eight yards. The visitors were enjoying the lion’s share of the possession but needed something special or a slice of good fortune to unlock a solid home back line.

Willock might have had a debut goal in the 65th minute meeting a free kick from the right but the ball brushed against his head and dropped wide.

Out of the blue the Pics threatened on 72 minutes and were tremendously unfortunate not to double their advantage. Hull ‘s header from a corner slammed against the bar and Brodie, following up saw his shot blocked on the line by team mate Danny Waldron before Matlock scrambled the ball clear.

Two minutes earlier Matlock had made a double change taking off Phillips and Willock and bringing on Jamie Jackson and Harry Limb but Rushall stayed firm and resolute. However it needed a brilliant tackle by Josh Webb to halt Jake Green who was pulling the trigger from eight yards out. For all the pressure they exerted, Matlock could not find a way through.

Landell drove wide in a late breakaway by the hosts who clung on to the points., but a draw would have been a fair outcome.
