Welcome to “My first Gladiators match day” where we take a look in to fans first match day memory at The Reynolds Stadium starting with former Leek Town player Mark Jones!

“Matlock Town v. Mossley 1969/70

Matlock signed Keith Kettleborough the ex Newcastle United and Sheffield United inside forward from Chesterfield, he had been in Sir Alf Ramsey’s early plans for the 1966 World Cup training squad, and this even caused interest in our small village near Ashbourne.
Consequently a plan was hatched to make the trip to Causeway Lane to see him in action against Mossley in the 3rd round of the inaugural FA Challenge Throphy. He and the match did not disappoint, resulting in an exciting 2-2 draw and this 9 year old was hooked.
Sadly following a 3-3 draw in the replay Matlock lost 1-2 in the second replay (no penalty shoot-outs in those days!!) at Buxton after missing a penalty, a game we also attended.

My love affair with football continued, and following 2 seasons as an apprentice professional footballer at Sheffield Wednesday I played for many years at Leek Town, although sadly I never got to play at Causeway Lane. Over the ensuing years I and now my sons continue to be infrequent visitors to see Matlock Town and my second son Jack went one better than his dad and did play at Causeway Lane, however that was for Derbyshire Dales Under 13 Cricket Team!!

Mark Jones”
