The Managers / Physio

Mark Atkins - Manager |
Mark was appointed in November 2008 with the club in a perilous position towards the foot of the UniBond League Premier Division table. He guided Matlock to safety and the Derbyshire Senior Cup Final by the end of the 2008/09 campaign. Last season he guided Matlock to a 7th spot finish and a Derbyshire Senior Cup Final victory. As a player he won the Premiership title with Blackburn Rovers in 1994/95. After transferring from Scunthorpe United. Then followed a £1 million move to Wolves. Mark has also served Doncaster Rovers, Hull City and Shrewsbury Town before moving into the non league game with Harrogate Town as a player and then as Assistant Manager. He was also Assistant Manager at Stalybridge Celtic.

Nick Buxton - Player / Assistant Manager |
Nick is a former Doncaster Rovers custodian who joined Matlock following the appointment of Mark Atkins as manager. He has also played at Harrogate Town and Stalybridge. As well as assisting Mark Atkins, Nick will take on the role of goalkeeping coach. Last season he made a number of impressive displays when deputising for regular custodian Adam Sollitt.

Mick Cunningham - Physio |
Micky the Sponge as he is known to Town fans is immensely popular at the club having served the Gladiators for 15 years as physio. He has become a trusted and highly respected figure at Matlock, although he does fervently support Sheffield Wednesday!

Goalkeepers

Jon Kennedy - Keeper |
Jon joined Matlock from league rivals Worksop Town in July 2011 following Adam Sollitt’s decision to retire. Like Sollitt, he is a former England non league international who began his career with the Tigers before joining Sunderland. Spells at Blackpool and Accrington Stanley followed and extensive non league experience then came with Gateshead, Halifax and Witton Albion before he rejoined Worksop. He has already earned much acclaim with the Matlock fans for a series of impressive performances in the pre season games. |
Defenders

James Lukic - Defender (Captain) |
James returned to Causeway Lane in the summer of 2009 after spending a season at Gainsborough Trinity. The nephew of former Leeds United, Arsenal and England goalkeeper John Lukic, James is possibly one of the most popular players to wear a Matlock shirt in the club’s recent history. He is likely to reach the milestone of 500 appearances for the Gladiators during this season.. He made his debut as a 16 year old back in 1998, being awarded a testimonial in 2008. A model of consistency and a leader both on and off the pitch, his displays and popularity has earned him the Fans Player of the Year and Players Player awards on numerous occasions. He is the team captain and this season will take on a coaching role at the club.

Lee Featherstone - Defender |
Left back Lee joined Matlock from local rivals Ilkeston Town, where he had spent fifteen months, in the summer of 2008. His career began at Sheffield United before a move to Scunthorpe United where he made sixty first team appearances. Alfreton Town was his next port of call where he made eighty appearances. Lee has also been pushed further forward into a midfield or striking role on occasions.

Adam Yates - Defender |
Adam is a young central defender who joined Matlock in February 2009 after impressing manager Mark Atkins in Shirebrook Town’s narrow defeat by Matlock in the Derbyshire Senior Cup semi final. Previously Adam was a youth team player at Chesterfield and has also served Belper Town.

Micky Harcourt - Defender |
Micky is a former Chesterfield junior who moved to Alfreton Town and then Belper Town, playing against the Gladiators in the 2010 Derbyshire Senior Cup Final at Pride Park. He moved to Glapwell in the summer of 2010 and put in an impressive display against Matlock in a 2010/2011 Derbyshire Senior Cup tie. When Glapwell could not continue to be members of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, manager Mark Atkins was quick to snap him up.during the summer. Primarily a full back, Micky has great adaptability and can operate also in central defence, midfield or even as a striker!

Simon Sturdy - Defender |
Simon is an experienced central defender having played at Harrogate Town and Droylsden in the Blue Square North League, plus Guiseley and Eastwood Town in the NPL. He won a NPL Champiuonship medal while with Eastwood. He had a spell on loan at Matlock from Harrogate during the 2009/10 season, but spent last term with Frickley Athletic.

Will Kendall - Defender |
Will is a left sided full back who has been released by Sheffield Wednesday but had a short spell with Retford United last season before joining Matlock during the summer. |
Midfielders

Steve Warne - Midfielder (Club Captain) |
Former Chesterfield midfielder who rejoined Matlock from Alfreton Town for a second spell with the Gladiators in the summer of 2008. He originally joined Matlock on loan from Hucknall Town towards the end of the 2003/04 season before making the move permanent in 2004/05. He is hugely popular with the fans and has turned in some highly impressive displays and is the club captain. He was voted as the Players Player of the Season in 2008/2009.

Liam King - Midfielder |
Liam is a tough tackling and energetic midfielder who joined Matlock following his release by Rotherham United in the summer of 2008. He had a spell on loan at Altrincham in the Blue Square Premier League prior to his release by the Millers. He pops up from midfield with a number of important goals.

Kris Bowler - Winger / Midfielder |
Kris returned to Matlock for a second spell in the summer of 2010 after three years away at Alfreton Town who signed him for a four figure fee. Kris began his career at Rotherham United before joining Wakefield and Emley prior to moving to Matlock for the first time in March 2004. An exciting player with an explosive shot, he and the Matlock fans will be looking forward to more fine goals and displays from a crowd favourite.

Kris Witcombe - Midfielder |
Kris joined Matlock in March 2010 having moved up to the area from the south west. He was previously with Cinderford Town. An important squad member, Kris can be relied on to give 100% commitment when called upon.

Chris Bettney - Midfielder |
Chris is an experienced winger who possesses an excellent cross and can be deadly from set piece situations. He has often been a thorn in Matlock’s side scoring for Alfreton, Bradford Park Avenue and Retford United against Matlock in the past, so Matlock fans will be hoping he can redress the balance now he is a Gladiator! He started out with Sheffield United, but has featured mostly in the non league game also being with Ilkeston Town, Harrogate Town and last season with Worksop Town.

James Knowles - Midfielder |
Former Burton Albion player who made three first team appearances, all in the Birmingham Senior Cup.an exciting player with an eye for a goal, James has had a spell at Grantham Town before joining the Gladiators in the summer of 2010

Gareth Davies - Midfielder |
Gareth is currently back at Matlock for a third spell after signing from Boston United in October 2010. He moved to the Pilgrims from the Gladiators in January 2010. Initially Gareth had a loan spell at Matlock from Chesterfield where he was a first team player several years ago. He has also played for Gainsborough Trinity and Stalybridge Celtic. A tough tackler with an eye for a pass.

Ben Algar - Midfielder |
Ben is back at Matlock after a short spell playing in New York. He originally joined Matlock from Chesterfield in August 2009. A skilful tricky winger, Ben has also fitted in well at left back.

Ben Hunter - Midfielder |
Ben is a left sided midfield player who joined Matlock in the summer of 2011 after impressing in a trial game. Ben has been playing recently in America but has also been with Winterton Rangers in the Northern Counties East League

Forwards

Dene Cropper - Striker |
6’2” forward Dene joined Matlock from Worksop Town for an undisclosed fee in September 2005. Unfortunately his career at Matlock has been blighted by a knee injury which saw him miss virtually two seasons of football. However, Dene has worked hard to make a fine recovery and is now weighing in with useful goals once again. His career began at Sheffield Wednesday before a move to Lincoln City where he made 36 appearances including a play off final at the Millenium Stadium against Bournemouth .He then moved to Boston United before joining Worksop.

Nathan Joynes - Striker |
Nathan has had League experience at both Barnsley and Bradford City plus a loan spell at Boston United. He has also been with AFC Halifax before joining Guiseley from whom he signed for the Gladiators in November 2009. He made an immediate impact by scoring the winner against Boston United on his debut before netting again in his next appearance when Matlock defeated Bloe Square Conference North neighbours Alfreton Town in the Derbyshire Senior Cup.

Ian Holmes - Striker |
Ian is back at Matlock for a second spell, his first being in 2006/07 after joining the club from Sheffield University. He quickly became a fans favourite, scoring a host of goals which saw him as the league’s top scorer. A move to Mansfield Town, then in League Two, followed in September 2008, but a change of manager at Field Mill halted the Liverpudlian’s progress and he was loaned out to AFC Telford before being released and joining Eastwood Town. He won a NPL Championship medal with the Badgers in 2008/09. A move to Ilkeston Town broke down in the summer of 2010 due to the Robins’ financial problems, so he moved to Glapwell, where again he was leading scorer, scooping the Evo-Stik First Division South Golden Boot award. He rejoined Matlock in June 2011. |

Lee Whittington - Striker |
Lee joined Matlock in the summer of 2011, and like Chris Bettney, has often hurt Matlock in the past, scoring against the Gladiators for Hednesford Town, Hucknall Town and last season, Retford United. A busy striker who was once at Scarborough, Lee will be hoping to make his mark at Matlock. |

Tyeisse (TJ) Nightingale - Striker |
Tyeisse is a lively front man who joined the Gladiators in the summer after two spells at Hucknall Town and shorter spells at both Alfreton Town and Eastwood Town. Blessed with good pace and work rate, he impressed manager Mark Atkins during the pre season campaign when he scored against Derby County and twice at Belper. |
