The Managers / Physio

Mark Atkins Mark Atkins - Manager

Mark was appointed as manager in November 2008 following the departures of Phil Brown and Gareth Williams. A former Premiership title winner, being the central midfield king pin at Blackburn Rovers in 1994/95, Mark moved to Wolves in a £1 million plus move during the following season. Mark also has extensive Football League experience with Scunthorpe United, Doncaster Rovers, Hull City and Shrewsbury Town before joining Harrogate Town firstly as a player and then becoming Assistant Manager. He also had the Assistant's role at Stalybridge Celtic. This is Mark's first permanent manager's position.

Mark Haran - Player / Assistant Manager

32 years old central defender who joined Matlock from Bradford Park Avenue, where he was skipper, in the close season . After being released by Rotherham United, Mark has enjoyed a long non-league career which has taken in Eastwood Town, Frickley Athletic, Worksop Town, Hednesford Town, Kettering Town, Harrogate Town and Stalybridge Celtic. He should add steel and organisation to the Matlock defence.

 

Nick Buxton - Player / Assistant Manager

Nick is a former Doncaster Rovers custodian who joined Matlock following the appointment of Mark Atkins as manager last season. He has also played at Harrogate Town and Stalybridge. As well as assisting Mark Atkins, Nick will take on the role of goalkeeping coach.

 

Mick Cunningham - Physio

Micky the Sponge as he is known to Town fans is immensely popular at the club having served the Gladiators for twelve years as physio. He has become a trusted and highly respected figure at Matlock, although he does fervently support Sheffield Wednesday!

Goalkeepers

Adam Sollitt - Keeper

32 year old Adam joined the Gladiators from Gainsborough Trinity during the close season. He began his career with Barnsley and has Football League experience at Northampton Town and Rushden & Diamonds. His non league career has seen him at Kettering Town, Worksop Town and Morecambe as well as having a first spell with Gainsborough following his release by Barnsley.

Paul Pettinger - Keeper

Vastly experienced goalkeeper signed from Belper Town in December 2008. Paul started off on Leeds United’s books before embarking on a long career in non league football at Kettering Town, Hucknall Town, Worksop Town, Ilkeston town, Harrogate Town and Stalybridge Celtic.

 

 

Defenders

James Lukic - Defender (Captain)

James returned to Causeway Lane in the close season after spending a season at Gainsborough Trinity. The nephew of former Leeds United, Arsenal and England goalkeeper John Lukic, James is possibly one of the most popular players to wear a Matlock shirt in the club’s recent history. He has made in excess of 400 first team appearances since making his debut as a 16 year old back in 1998, being awarded a testimonial in 2008. A model of consistency and a leader both on and off the pitch, his displays and popularity has earned him the Fans Player of the Year and Players Player awards on numerous occasions.

 

Lee Featherstone Lee Featherstone - Defender

Left back Lee joined Matlock from local rivals Ilkeston Town, where he had spent fifteen months, in the summer of 2008. His career began at Sheffield United before a move to Scunthorpe United where he made sixty first team appearances. Alfreton Town was his next port of call where he made eighty appearances. Lee has also been pushed further forward into a midfield or striking role on occasions.

 

Adam Yates - Defender

Adam is a young central defender who joined Matlock in February 2009 after impressing manager Mark Atkins in Shirebrook Town’s narrow defeat by Matlock in the Derbyshire Senior Cup semi final. Previously Adam was a youth team player at Chesterfield and has also served Belper Town.

 

Danny Wood - Defender

Danny joined Matlock on loan from Stalybridge Celtic in January 2009 and has since made the move to Matlock permanent. He has put in some consistent displays both at full back and in midfield since his arrival.

 

Scott Brough - Defender

Scott is a tough tackling full back formerly with Scunthorpe United before having spells at Barrow and Buxton. He joined Matlock from Frickley Athletic in February 2009 and has turned in some impressive displays since.

 

Joe Storer - Defender

19 years old Joe was with Alfreton Town before joining Matlock in the summer. He has impressed in the pre season fixtures and is seen as a defender of high promise.

 

 

 

Midfielders

Steve Warne Steve Warne - Midfielder (Club Captain)

Former Chesterfield midfielder who rejoined Matlock from Alfreton Town for a second spell with the Gladiators in the summer of 2008. He originally joined Matlock on loan from Hucknall Town towards the end of the 2003/04 season before making the move permanent in 2004/05. He is hugely popular with the fans and has turned in some highly impressive displays which saw him appointed as captain last season and named Players Player of the Season.

 

Gareth Davies - Midfielder

Former Chesterfield midfielder who spent a loan period with Matlock from the Spireites in season 2002/03.  He played 116 times for Chesterfield, scoring two goals. A loan period at Stalybridge Celtic followed before a move to Halifax. Last season he was at Gainsborough Trinity before joining Matlock in the summer.

Liam King Liam King - Midfielder

Liam is a close season capture from Rotherham United. Liam, 20 years old, is a tough tackling midfielder but can also fill in in the defence if required. Liam joins the Gladiators after a loan spell at Altrincham last season.

Ben Alger - Winger / Midfielder

20 years old Ben was released by Chesterfield at the end of last season and wanted to stay full time having trials at Mansfield Town. However, Mark Atkins had been tracking this exciting, tricky left winger since the summer and finally got his man in September 2009.

 

Darren Cartwright - Winger / Midfielder

Darren is a product of the Gladiators under 19 side who has greatly impressed manager Mark Atkins during the pre season games.

 

 

Forwards

Ross Hannah Ross Hannah - Striker

Ross who is 22 was a junior with both Sheffield Wednesday and United before signing for Stocksbridge in 2004. He then had his first spell at Belper with a 2 month loan from Stocksbridge before joining Gainsborough for the 2006/07 season. Ross returned to Belper at the start of season 07/08 and in the 48 matches which he played he was leading scorer with 26 goals and he is really looking forward to progressing his career with a step-up to the Premier Division.

Dene Cropper Dene Cropper - Striker

Dene joined Matlock in September 2005 for an undisclosed fee. He began his career with Sheffield Wednesday but was released to join Lincoln City where he made 36 first team appearances including a play off final against Bournemouth at the Millennium Stadium. After a knee injury he had a short spell at Boston United before joining Worksop at the start of the 2004/05 campaign. Unfortunately a cruciate ligament injury forced Dene to miss the whole of the 2006-07 season, but he is working his way back, and hopes to return to full fitness this season.

Nathan Benger - Striker

Nathan returned to Causeway Lane after a short spell with Glapwell during the start of the 2009/10 season. Nathan always gives 100% and since retuning to Matlock has scored some important goals, a striker who wants to progress and is willing to play a midfield role when needed.

 

Nathan Joynes - Striker

25 year old Nathan signed for Matlock during November 2009.  Signed from Guiseley, Nathan was formerly with Bradford City, FC Halifax and had a loan spell at Boston Utd.  Nathan made an impressive start to his Matlock career by scoring on his debut.
