Matlock put in another solid performance against lower opposition in their second pre season friendly at Teversal. Superb strikes from the front two, Hannah and Knowles won the game for the Gladiators, who controlled much of the game.
The match started slowly with both sides finding it difficult to settle and apart from a Wiggin Thomas effort, the first fifteen minutes offered little in quality. At that point Matlock took a grip of the game and King and Hannah both squandered excellent chances to put Town ahead, before a moment of quality did put them in front.
Good work down the left from Featherstone and Jenkins worked an opening for trialist, James Knowles, who turned his man sweetly and cracked a shot into the net from 20 yards, leaving Teversal keeper Davies stranded. Knowles linked well with Hannah all afternoon and looks a promising find.
Just before half time, it appeared the Matlock defence had knocked off early as Teveral spurned their only real chances with both forwards missing opportunities from close range.
Atkins kept the team out for the half time chat and seemed to be delivering quite strong words of advice. Wholesale changes at half time brought a similar pattern in the second half, although it didn’t take long for Matlock to double their advantage with a sublime free kick from top scorer Ross Hannah. Hannah fired in from just outside the corner of the penalty box, a shot which would have beaten many a better keeper than Davies in the Teversal net.
The other pleasing sight was seeing Kris Bowler back in a Matlock shirt, and he showed some lovely touches linking up with Steve Warne in the middle of the park.
All in all it was not a classic, but it was all about getting fitness levels up before that all important first league game at home to Stocksbridge on Saturday 21st August.
