Adam began his career at Manchester City, also turning out for England U20s.

He would have loan spells with Carlisle United and Leeds United, before moving permanently to Elland Road where he played 45 times.

Two years at Huddersfield Town followed, before moving to Middlesbrough for whom he won promotion to the Premier League, playing for a season in the top flight.

After six years at Boro, he moved to Birmingham City, followed by short spells with Doncaster Rovers, Bradford City, Rochdale and Liversedge, moving on to Matlock in October 2024.
