Day has contract terminated to join Whitby Town

Striker Jake Day’s contract has been terminated at Matlock Town and he will be joining Whitby Town.

Discussions between Gladiators and Whitby officials took place over the weekend and the move was confirmed on Tuesday morning.

Bridlington based Day (30) was signed by former manager Paul Phillips during the summer following the departure to Worksop Town of captain Liam Hughes. The six foot three Day was seen as a like for like replacement for Hughes, joining up from Scarborough Athletic.

Also a heavyweight boxer, Day had previously been with Bridlington Town where he scored 85 times in 107 appearances, Alfreton Town and Guiseley.

Day netted three times in pre-season but could not find the net once the competitive season got under way, and gradually went down the pecking order as of Kallan Murphy made the number nine shirt his own once international clearance came through allowing him to play.

Matlock manager Craig Elliott says a move to Whitby will benefit Day.

“Jake was signed by the previous manager and after speaking to him of my plans, I couldn’t give him assurances of playing games. Obviously living in Bridlington it just felt the best outcome was for Jake to go and play games nearer home. I’m glad he’s got sorted and I wish him well.”
