Martin Carruthers

Martin was appointed in December 2022 following the departure of Craig Elliott to Buxton. A former Football League striker he made 503 appearances scoring 133 goals including playing top flight football at Aston Villa. He made 121 appearances for Stoke City in the First Division (now Championship) between 1993 and 1997, the rest of his career being in Leagues One and Two. In non-league he started out at Grantham town before moving to Ilkeston where he would become player-coach. He had a very successful six years at Basford United, guiding them from the East Midlands League to the NPL Premier Division. After a short spell managing Quorn he was back at Ilkeston and last season he led them to the NPL Midlands Division title. He left Ilkeston by mutual consent in September 2022 and had a successful first few months at Matlock by leading them to a 5th placed finish and qualify for the NPL Premier Division play offs.
