THE PREVIEW | Ashton United Vs MTFC -Pitching In NPL - 27.9.22
Matlock Town take on Ashton United at Hurst Cross Stadium on Tuesday evening in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. A win for the Gladiators could move them into the play-off places.
Craig Elliott's side are looking for their second victory in a row to follow up their 1-0 win at home over Lancaster City in the league last weekend. Elliott is also looking for his first away victory as the Gladiators manager.
Ashton United have made a very promising start to their 2022/23 campaign. Ashton are currently in second position in the NPL Premier Division and just two points behind league leaders South Shields. They're also unbeaten at home in the league so far this season. In their most recent game, Ashton United drew 1-1 at home against Marine in the league last weekend. The Greater Manchester outfit finished 15th in the NPL Premier Division last season.
Ashton United are known as the Robins and were formed back in 1878. The Robins play their home games at Hurst Cross Stadium which is based in Ashton-under-Lyne within Greater Manchester. The ground can hold up to 4,500 people and has a seated capacity of up to 250. The most recent trophy that the Robins lifted was last season when they won the Manchester Premier Cup. Ashton's manager is former Manchester United, Oldham Athletic and England U21 player Michael Clegg.
One to Watch
27 year-old striker Callum Saunders will be a key player to look out for on Tuesday evening.
Saunders moved to the Robins in June ahead of the club's pre-season games. He's scored six goals for Ashton so far this season and provided the assist for Ashton's goal against Marine last weekend.
Callum joined Ashton United from Witton Albion. Despite Witton's relegation in the 2021/22 campaign, Saunders still managed to bag 17 goals in the NPL Premier Division last season.
Saunders represented Wales's U19 and U21 sides earlier in his career and is the son of former Liverpool, Aston Villa and Wales striker Dean Saunders.
Craig Elliott should have a full squad of players available to him for Tuesday night's game.
These two sides last played each other in March last season and the NPL Premier Division game ended as a 1-1 draw at The Proctor Cars Stadium.
Jesurun Uchegbulam gave Matlock the lead in the first half before Cole Lonsdale equalised for the Robins.
The match was watched by a crowd of 464.
