The Matlock Mercury sponsored Matlock Town FC Fans Player Of The Year award will be presented at the Gladiators End Of Season Presentation Evening in the Shorts Lounge on Friday night.

All of the votes are in as we wait to see who will succeed skipper Adam Yates as the fans favourite in what has been a mixed season.

The Gladiators ended in 15th spot after being both top and bottom of the league in the opening seven weeks of the 2018/19 campaign. A formidable run of form between the start of October and New Years Day which brought only one league defeat saw Town challenging for a play off spot before poor results in 2019 saw the Gladiators slide down the table as they picked up only nine out of a possible fifty one points on offer. Manager Dave Frecklington, who had replaced former boss Dave Hoole in September, left after the final day defeat to Stafford Rangers.

Other awards on the night will be the Young Player Of The Season, with those under the age of 23 in the frame,(won last season by Jake Green), and the players choice of their player of the season which will see the winner handed a special prize courtesy of CW Sellors (Jeweller).

Committeeman Steven Greenhough will be handing over the leading goalscorer award to Craig Westcarr who has hit sixteen league and cup goals, including hat-tricks away against North Ferriby and at home to Grantham Town.

There is also the Club Person Of The Year Award which can go to someone connected with the playing side or who works behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of the club throughout the year.

Admission on the night which gets underway from 7.30 pm is free which includes a buffet, a review of the season including footage from memorable moments throughout the campaign and two spots plus an encore of music from Ilkeston based duo JD & Coke who play hits to suit all tastes.

Those who attend will also be able to vote for their goal of the season, the list of goals will be played on a big screen to remind fans of their quality.

“It’s been a tough end to the season but the awards night is one we all look forward to each year. A lot of effort has been put into revamping the night with entertainment and the look back on the season, so with a buffet provided and free admission, we think fans should enjoy a great night” said Chairman Tom Wright.

Matlock Town say they have now stopped accepting applications for the vacant manager’s job at the Proctor Cars Stadium.

Dave Frecklington’s seven months stint in the hot seat ended last weekend in their final day defeat at Stafford Rangers. Assistant Chris Rawlinson and coach Terry Fleming are also leaving with Frecklington.

“We’ve received a good number of applications from high calibre applicants and we’ll be going through these with interviews to set place after that” said Chairman Tom Wright.

“I’d like to thank all those who have applied. It goes to show what a good club we have here at Matlock with it being a very attractive job and now it’s important we select the right candidate to take the club forward.”
