Carruthers beats out other clubs to Deakin capture

Matlock boss Martin Carruthers has made his first permanent signing of his tenure with striker Jack Deakin joining the Gladiators following his release by League Two Mansfield Town.

The 18 year old, previously at Sheffield Wednesday, signed a scholarship with the Stags in July 2020. Standing at a little over 6’1” he is adept at holding play up with his back to goal. During his time with Mansfield, Deakin was loaned out to National League North Alfreton Town last term and more recently to Barwell in the Southern League Premier Central Division.

Carruthers says he is looking forward to working with Deakin.

“Jack’s a bright young striker who has just been released by Mansfield so we moved quickly to get him on board for he’d done well at Barwell on loan earlier in the season. He’s powerful and physical and will add a presence to us in attack, he’s also energetic and willing to learn and improve so we hope that he’ll score a lot of goals for us and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Due to the New Year Holiday, Deakin’s debut is expected to be delayed until Saturday when Matlock host Morpeth Town, as the offices at the relevant registration authorities are closed.

The Gladiators are at Gainsborough Trinity tomorrow.
