Carruthers looks to the future as Gladiators U21's trio sign first team forms

Matlock Town manager Martin Carruthers says the signing of three players from the under 21 squad on first-team forms is a reward for the players and presents a possible route for other youngsters with the Gladiators to reach the first team.

The three are central defender James Colebourne, plus midfielders Charlie Wood and Charlie Humphries and subject to approval, they could all feature in the Gladiators squad which faces Mickleover in the Derbyshire Senior Cup quarter final at the Proctor Cars Stadium tonight (Tuesday).

“I’m delighted to reward the recent impressive performances of these lads in the under 21s," said Carruthers.

“With the new academy on the horizon it’s vital that the young players have a pathway to the first team and that opportunities will be available to them if they’re performing well and working hard. We want young local players to come through the ranks and this helps retaining the best young players in the local community.”

Under 21 head coach James Holmes could not hide both his pride and excitement brought about by the talent of Colebourne, Wood and Humphries being recognised by Carruthers.

“I’d worked with these young local lads previously and I’m very proud to see them all taking their next steps on their footballing journey. I’m ecstatic that the development system can once again aid our first team and highlight the pathway our development system can provide to talented young people within the local area.”
