Carruthers shops local with Wilko addition!

19 years old George Wilkinson is Matlock Town’s latest signing, subject to NPL and FA approval, coming to the Proctor Cars Stadium on loan from Chesterfield.

Wilkinson has been a trialist in the Gladiators pre season matches against Buxton, Mansfield Town and Belper Town. Usually a central defender he is comfortable playing in any position across the back line.

He joined Chesterfield playing at under 9 level progressing to the youth team and to gain experience in mens football he went to Staveley Miners Welfare.

Wilkinson’s first team debut for the Spireites came last season in a 3-1 home defeat by Coalville Town in the FA Trophy when he scored the Spireites goal. Later in the season he was on loan at Coalville as the Ravens narrowly lost out in the chase for the Southern League Premier Central title race.

Matlock boss Martin Carruthers has been impressed with Alfreton born Wilkinson and feels that he will be a real asset for the Gladiators.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have secured George, he did really well at Coalville last season and they were really keen to sign him for this season. So it’s a real coup for us to get him, he’s a really talented young player and we’re looking forward to working with him this season.”
