Gladiators complete Barnestorming signing!

Matlock Town boss Martin Carruthers has strengthened the Gladiators’ midfield department by bringing in Josh Barnes on a three months loan deal from Basford United.

Nottingham born Barnes (22) stands at 5’11” and can also play in defence so he offers adaptability to Carruthers but also provides extra legs in the engine room.

Formerly with Nottingham Forest and joining the Reds at the age of eight, Barnes played predominantly for their under 18’s 21’s and 23 sides, having a taste of first team action during the pre season of 2020/21. To gain experience of mens’ football Barnes went on loan to Truro City playing in the National League South. Forest released him in the summer of 2022 and he joined Basford.

Carruthers says Barnes is just what Matlock want as they aim to be more competitive in midfield.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have secured Josh on loan for three months. He’s a highly rated young player who’ll add additional quality to our squad. He’s a versatile left footer who can play at the back or in midfield. His time at Nottingham Forest will put him in good stead, he’s keen to develop and progress his career further and sees Matlock as the perfect platform to do this. He’ll bring energy and give us more options on the left side of the pitch and I’m sure he’ll get a warm welcome from the supporters and everyone at the club.”

Barnes is clear to play in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy and could make his debut on Saturday when the Gladiators travel to Gainsborough Trinity for an FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round clash.
