Hot-shot Margetts makes Matlock move!
Matlock Town boss Martin Carruthers labels his latest addition as a”statement” signing.
The Gladiators have brought in 29 years old Doncaster based striker Jonathan Margetts from Stamford who won the NPL Midlands Division title last season.
It will be Margetts’ second spell at Matlock, the first being a loan signing from Boston United in January 2019 when he netted four goals in five matches in a side which was then struggling for consistency.
Margetts scored a mammoth 36 goals for the Daniels last term, 33 of them in league matches to finish as the division’s leading scorer and Matlock manager Martin Carruthers will be hoping that Margetts can provide the same kind of potency in the top tier next season.
“I’m absolutely delighted to get Jon’s signing over the line, it’s a real statement of intent from the club. To get a goalscorer in of this calibre shows the ambition we have here at Matlock . We had to be patient but everything’s fallen in nicely for us, it’s no secret that a regular goalscorer is something we lacked this season. It’s really exciting now with Reece Styche and Karl Demidh in there as well.”
Margetts started out at Hull City before featuring at Cambridge United, Tranmere Rovers, Lincoln City and Scunthorpe United with loan spells at a number of non league sides. More recently he has been with Boston United, Gainsborough Trinity, Frickley Athletic and Belper Town before his move to Stamford.
He has enjoyed success in the past against the Gladiators, netting Trinity’s first goal in a 2-0 win at the Proctor Cars Stadium on New Years Day in 2019 and then while with Brlper he helped himself to a hat-trick when the Nailers knocked Matlock out of the FA Cup in September 2021.
Margetts is Carruthers’ fifth new signing of the summer, the Gladiators chief having already brought in midfielders Andrew Wright and Ollie Clark, defender Joe West and winger Nathaniel Crofts.
