Shot stopper Deeney becomes the latest Gladiator retained

Goalkeeper Saul Deeney is the latest Gladiator from 2022/23 to be retained by boss Martin Carruthers.

Now 40, Deeney joined Matlock in January from Ilkeston Town when regular custodian Jim Pollard was suspended and apart from two games at South Shields and Stalybridge, he was given the nod to wear the number 1 shirt.

Highly experienced, he has played for Notts County, Hull City, Burton Albion and Derby County and probably his finest moment came when playing for Burton in an FA Cup 3rd Round tie against Alex Ferguson’s mighty Manchester United in January 2006 when he kept a clean sheet as the Brewers held on for a replay at the Pirelli Stadium. Before his move to Ilkeston, Deeney had been at Basford United and Coalville Town.

Matlock boss Martin Carruthers says Deeney played a huge role in Matlock achieving a play-off spot last season.

“I’m delighted Saul has agreed to stay with us, his form in the run-in was exceptional. The amount of clean sheets he kept and saves in tight games were pivotal in us reaching the play-offs. Despite his age he’s the best goalkeeper at this level and we’re lucky to have him. I’m looking forward to another great season from him.”
